Unifying systems
The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) is a cornerstone of the UK's healthcare system, dedicated to improving public health through world-class clinical research. As one of the largest national clinical research systems globally, the scale of their operations is immense.
Their work, funded by the Department of Health and Social Care, generates a vast amount of data that is meticulously managed through their Central Portfolio Management System (CPMS). However, a significant challenge emerged: the need to bridge the gap between their CPMS and their learning management system, NIHR Learn. Our task was to create a seamless, integrated solution to eliminate data silos and accelerate the critical research process.

Connecting proprietary tech with Moodle to streamline the NIHR's research
The NIHR approached us with a clear objective: to design and build a sophisticated integration that would allow NIHR Learn, their Moodle-based LMS, to communicate directly with CPMS. The goal was to create a seamless workflow, a single point of truth where staff could manage research projects without the need for multiple platforms.
We set out to develop a robust API that would facilitate this complex communication, allowing functions to be performed directly within Moodle. This ambitious project involved designing a complete Study Registration Process, complete with detailed verification and eligibility checks, as well as a full end-to-end approval, registration, and enrolment system.
Intelligent inter-system communication

Goodbye to double-handling
Our innovative solution provides a wide range of features and functionalities, all designed to support more efficient study management. The integration allows researchers to submit study documentation, add and manage study locations, handle regulatory approvals, and report on study progress directly within NIHR Learn. Crucially, it includes full audit logs and a wealth of other functions.
By building a brand-new API for Moodle that can communicate directly with the APIs on CPMS, we ensured that the NIHR would no longer need to double-handle data. This streamlined process saves valuable time and resources, allowing their staff to focus on what truly matters: advancing research.

The successful integration of these two critical systems has revolutionised the NIHR’s workflow. Our innovative, time-saving API has freed up resources for the NIHR and provided staff with a unified, streamlined solution. The result is a more efficient and effective process for managing vital research projects, allowing them to progress faster from inception to completion.
By eliminating the manual and repetitive tasks associated with managing data across separate systems, we have helped ensure that valuable research can move forward with greater speed and accuracy, ultimately contributing to better health and care for everyone.
