There’s been a lot of buzz about AI recently, in particular, ChatGPT, with mixed reactions coming from different corners of the e-learning world. Some are seeing it as a way to help plan their courses and research, while others are running for the hills, saying we’re all going to be replaced by robots.
We planned a Valentine's Day online course in seconds using ChatGPT
Here at adaptiVLE, we’re definitely in the “AI-as-a-useful-tool” camp and we’ve been playing around with different ways AI can help with e-learning.
This week, we’re specifically looking at ChatGPT, an AI language model developed by OpenAI that has been designed to assist users with inquiries and tasks. It basically scours the internet to answer queries and uses AI to write unique, naturally phrased responses.
Whilst many people use it to write articles and blogs, we’ve found that it’s actually really good for planning out structures for online training programmes. It will generate logical learning pathways and give you the section headings and other useful ideas. You can then ask it to expand on these headings to give you whole tracts of information you can turn into lessons.
It’s not designed to replace e-learning professionals or the human touch that is essential to effective education and learning, however, it is a fantastic time-saving tool when it comes to research and planning, especially if you’re struggling to get started on a new topic. Of course, it is important to remember that it is an AI-powered model and its responses should be evaluated and fact-checked before being used in an online course. And that’s where the unique value of educators, trainers, and e-learning developers comes into play - AI, as yet, cannot replicate the engaging and impactful skills they bring to course creation.
Take a look at the video at the start of this page to see how quickly ChatGPT planned out a course about Valentine’s Day, then have a play yourself and see how you can use it to your benefit.
